ABG: Arterial Blood Gases; blood is measured for O2 content.  Indications: asthma, COPD, chest trauma

Barcley's Protomorphosis Syndrome- Named after U.S.S. Enterprise-D engineer Reginald Barclay, this disease crippled the crew of the ship, by de-evolving the crew. Altering genetic strands and changing T cell's. The reverse process can stop this de-evolvment. 

BERTHOLD RAYS: are a deadly radiation that causes disintegration of  carbon-based animal tissue, including humanoid tissue.

Bi-caridine Treatment- Regenerative therapy for fracture patients. It is used as a substitute in-patients that are allergic to metorapan.

Biofilter, Transporter- A subsystem of the transporter designed to scan an incoming transporter beam prior to materialisation and to remove potentially harmful disease and virus contamination. The biofilter could be programmed against a wide range of disease organisms, but was only effective against organisms so programmed.

Bioregenerative Field- Radiated energy used in biomedical applications to accelerate cellular growth.

Brain Circuitry Pattern- Medical diagnostic image mapping neural activity in a humanoid brain. The BCP of each individual is unique and this serves as a positive means of identification.

Brak’ul- Klingon term for a characteristic redundancy in Klingon physiology.

Cardiac induction- Emergency medical resuscitative measure.

Cardiac Enzymes:  Enzymes released by damaged heart muscles

Cardiac Replacement- Surgical procedure in which a patient’s diseased or injured heart is replaced by an artificial device. The technique was developed by Dr. Van Doren.

Cardio-Stimulator- Medical instrument used to revive a patient who went into cardiac arrest.

Cellular Metamorphosis- Process allowing an individual to assume another’s form.

Chem 7: Measures basic electrolytes in blood: Na, Cl, K, CO2, blood urea N2 (BUN), creatinine, and glucose

Chief Medical Officer- Aboard a Federations starship, the officer charged with the responsibility for the health and well being of the ship’s crew. Under certain circumstances, the CMO is authorised to certify a ship’s captain as unfit for command.

Chief Surgeon- The CMO's second in command aboard a starship. His/Her duties are to run the surgical bay, and provide surgical assistance to the crew. A specialist in the filed of Surgery, the Chief Surgeon is usually left to deal with medical procedure on his/her own, unless absolutely crucial the CMO will not interfere. 

Cortical Stimulator- Resuscitative device used aboard Federation starship’s.

CPK Enzymatic Therapy- Medical treatment to limit the extent of spinal injury.

CPK levels- A medical test, CPK or creatinine phosphokinase, is a marker of muscular damage. It is mostly used to diagnose cardiac damage.

Cryonics- Old practice of cryogenically freezing a human just after death in the hopes that future medical advances would render their sickness curable. Some cryogenically frozen bodies were actually sent into space in orbiting satellites for long-term storage.

Cryostasis- Medical procedure used to slow down biological functions in a critically injured patient, allowing the physician more time to correct the malady.

Decompression chamber- Medical treatment facility aboard a Federation starship, for patients requiring treatment for exposure to atmospheric pressures other than Class M normal.

DELTA RADIATION:  is a form of hazardous energy, severe delta-rays emitted from a star, can interfere with ships sensors as well.

Detronel Scanner- Medical instrument used to read and encode the DNA patterns of living tissue.

Diencephalon- Part of a humanoid brain, posterior to the forebrain. The hypothalamus, thalamus, and epithalamus are contained in the diensephalon.

Direct Reticulate Stimulation- Medical procedure in which energy is applied directly to the nervous system of a humanoid patient, in an attempt to revive neural activity. The neural stimulator is used in this procedure.

DNA- Acronym for deoxyribonucleic acid, a complex chemical chains containing the genetic codes enabling the reproduction of life on many planets. Virtually every individual life form on such planets has a DNA code, which contains information common to that species, as well as distinguishing information unique to that individual. Because of this, DNA sequencing can be used as a means of positively identifying an individual, although it cannot distinguish between the individual and a clone.

DNA Reference Scan- Medical test to confirm an individual’s identity by matching DNA patterns.

Drechtal Beams- Surgical device used to sever neural connections.

Dynoscanner- Sensor device used to detect low level molecular activity.

Electrophoretic Analysis-Standard medical test runs to analyse cellular components.

Encephalographic Polygraph Scan- Brainwaves scan used to determine truthfulness during questioning.

Engram- In neurophysiology, a specific complex memory.

Exoscalpel- Surgical instrument used by Starfleet medical personnel to incise the skin and expose underlying tissue.

Extrasensory Perception- Various mental and telekinetic powers, currently inexplicable by conventional science.

Frontal Lobe- The anterior portion of the cerebral hemisphere in humanoid brains.

Ganglion- A mass of nervous tissue that join together outside the brain or spinal cord.

Genetronic Replicator- Experimental device, developed by neurogeneticist Dr. Toby Russell, designed to translate the genetic code into a specific set of replication instructions, allowing the device to grow replacement organs.

Glial Cells- More specifically known as neuralgia; tissue that forms the supporting elements of the nervous system, which play an important role in reacting to injury or infection.  They are more specifically known as NEUROGLIA; tissue that  forms the supporting elements of the nervous systems which play an important  role in reacting to injury or infection. One can use weak electrical charges  as bio-coded messages, placed under the fingernails. If scratched onto another  person, the bio-coded message would then be transferred to the victim’s  neuroglia cells and straight to their brain, where this information can be stored. However, the side effects can become irritable.

Hematocrit ("Crit"):  Measure number of RBC; decrease means hemorrhage or anemia

Hippocampus- A component of the limbic system in a humanoid brain. The hippocampus co-ordinates the off action, autonomic functions, and some aspects of emotional behaviour.

Histamine- Biochemical substance produced by the breakdown of histidine, an amino acid found in humanoid tissues. The body produces histamine when it comes in contact with substances to which the body is sensitised, and is a primary factor in the humanoid allergic response.  Biochemical substance derived from the breakdown of naturally occurring substance histodine. It is responsible for a majority of humanoid allergic reactions,  and has also been recognized as a symptom of Iresine Syndrome, when histamine levels are said to be depressed.

Hyperencephlogram- Medical tests that records and measures brain wave activity.

HYPERONIC RADIATION: is a hazardous form of energy present in the atmospheres of some planets- fatal to humans.

Hypospray- Medical instrument used by Starfleet medical personnel for subcutaneous and intramuscular administration of medication for many humanoid patients. The hypospray uses an extremely fine, high-pressure aerosuspension delivery system, eliminating the need for a needle to physically penetrate the skin.

HYTRITIUM: a highly unstable substance used to neutralize poisonous tricyanate. Pure hytritium is too unstable to convey by transporter

Infirmary- Medical facility aboard any space station or planet, that takes cares of the medical needs of humanoids. On ships, they are referred to as sickbays.

Inner eyelid- Part of the Vulcan eye which evolved because the power of the bright Vulcan sun necessitated a secondary means of protecting the retina.

Inner Nuncial Series- A battery of neurological tests.

Invidium- A substance formerly used in medical containment fields.

Isocortex- The extreme outer layer of the cerebral cortex in a humanoid brain.

Magnesite-Nitron Tablet:  This small tablet, when crushed, provides emergency illumination and heat through a bright flame. Usually carried as part of an emergency medical field kit, the tablets could also be employed for ignition of a larger fire, heating of food or sterilization of water.

Microcentrum Cell Membrane- Physical attribute of life forms that are unaffected by triolic waves. These are often seen in shape shifters

Microcircuit Fibres- Part of the Borg devices implanted into Jean-Luc Picard’s body when he was abducted and surgically altered by the Borg in 2366. Infiltration of the fibers into healthy tissue around Borg implants causes changes in the cellular DNA around the implants and makes surgical removal impossible while implants are active.

Mitosis- The ordered process of cell division, whereby one parent bell produces two genetically identical daughter cells.

Motor Assist Bands- Four centimeter wide straplike devices used with neurologically damaged patients. The bands provide electrical stimulation to the patient’s limbs and help with muscle retraining.

Myocardial Enzyme Balance- Medical test used in surgical, particularly cardiac, procedures.

Neural Callipers- Medical instrument used in surgical procedures.

Neural Imaging Scan- Medical diagnostic scan used to test the acuity of the patient’s visual cortex.

Neural Implants- The bioelectrical interface between Geordie La Forge’s visual cortex and his VISOR. 

Neural Neutraliser- A device invented by Dr. Simon Van Gelder in 2266 to aid rehabilitation of criminals. The neutralizer was intended to selectively remove thoughts relating to criminal acts, but was later found to have potentially lethal effects.

Neural Output Pods- Component of Geordie La Forge’s VISOR, the neural output rods transmitted the VISOR’s visual data to La Forge’s brain.

Neural Stimulator- Medical instrument used to increase neural activity in the central nervous system of a humanoid brain.

Neural Transducers- Implantable bioelectric devices that received nerve impulses from the brain and transmitted it to the affected voluntary muscle groups. These instruments were used in cases of severe spinal cord damage to give the patient some control over the affected extremities.

Neurogenetics- Study of the development and genetic replication of neural tissue.

Neurolink- Emergency medical technique used for the stabilization of patients with brainstem injuries. Matching neural pads are used. One would be placed on a healthy individual and a matching unit on the patient. The devices enabled a link to be established from the healthy person’s autonomic nervous system to that of the injured patient.

Neurosomatic Technique- Procedure used on the planetTilonus IV in an attempt to extract information from Commander William Riker, captured there in 2369. Using neurosomatic techniques, his captor’s created a delusional world in which Riker believed he was an inmate at the Tilonus Institute for Mental Disorders.

Neurotransmitter- Biochemical associated with the propagation of electrical energy between neurones in humanoid nervous systems.

Nitrogen Narcosis- Also known as the "Rapture of the Deep," or the bends, nitrogen narcosis was a hazard of 20th century Earth deep sea diving. It is caused by the replacement of oxygen in oxyhemoglobin with nitrogen. The resultant anoxia produced disorientation, hallucinations, and a lack of judgment in the victims.

Nurse- The Nurse provides assistance to the medical team of the ship. Acting as a liaison between patients and the Dr. They Nurse can be called upon to do may tasks.

Nurse, Head- The head nurse duties are to run the team of medical nurses, as well as perform the normal duties of a nurse.
 

Partenogenic Implant- An artificial device, surgically implanted into a human body.

Peritoneum- Membrane lining the abdominal cavity in many humanoid species, including Bajorans.

Pheromones- Biochemicals secreted by many carbon based life forms, whose scent affects the behavior of other members of the same or similar species. Certain pheromones control the degree of sexual attractiveness attributed to an individual.

Phoretic Analyser- Biomedical analysis used aboard Deep Space Nine

Physiostimulator- Medical instrument used to elevate metabolic functions in an impaired individual.

Plasma Infusion Unit- Medical equipment used aboard Federation starships to dispense fluid and electrolytes.

Platelets:  Blood factors that cause clotting

Protodynoplaser- Medical instrument used aboard the Enterprise-D.

Psychological Profile- Complete psychological history required of all Starfleet personnel.

Psychotricorder- Instrument used to record past memories.

Pulmonary Support Unit- Emergency cardiopulmonary unit in use aboard Federation starship's.

REPLICATIVE FADING:  Loss of genetic information occurring when an organism is 
 repeatedly cloned.

Sinus Rhythm:  Normal heartbeat

Tachycardia:  Fast heart rate; normal heart rate is 60-100 beats per minute

TRICYANATE: is a purple crystalline substance that occurs naturally on some planets. Toxic to humans, can be found in water supplies as well.

TETRALUBISOL: is a highly volatile liquid lubricant used aboard starships. It can be a poison when ingested.

THALAMUS: is a portion of the humanoid brain, deep with the cerebral  hemispheres. The thalamus relays bodily sensations to the cortex for  interpretation.

TRILITHIUM RESIN: is a highly toxic waste by-products created when the dilithium is exposed to intense matter/antimatter reactions in a starships warp engine core.

 TRIOLIC WAVES: are by-products of an energy source employed by some  planets stratosphere (lower atmosphere). The energy source has deleterious effects on most living tissues, except for life-forms with microcentrum cell membranes.
