Medical Responsibilities:
A Medical officer, whether CMO or one of the lowest Techs [technicians]
and nurses, has certain responsibilities he or she must abide by at all
times. Say for instance, the ship is taken by hostile forces and
the more aggressive crew are fighting for it back. Your duty, as
Doctors in New Frontier, is to treat each and every injured person and
turn the aggressors over to security. Now this may seem a little
funny to those who have been simming for a long period now, but we have
all, in character, taken a hippocratic oath to do no harm, and this is
included.
Here is a run down on the responsibilities for each position.
If I've left anything out, don't hesitate to write me.
Chief Medical Officer:
The CMO of a Starship/starbase is responsible for each and every
crew members' health and safety in every day life, and on away missions.
As the most experienced and more than likely highest ranking medical person
on board, you are often called upon to perform Major surgery all the way
down to the every day cuts, sprains, and springs. If you have a Family
ship, you
will also be called upon to treat family members and even, at times,
pets. Do not be surprised if you also have to perform Dental services.
In the twenty-fourth century, the CMO is both Dentist, Physician, Optometrist,
and more. Your dealings with patients can go from normal to bizarre
very
quickly.
Assistant Medical Officer(ACMO):
The duties of an assistant medical officer are as follows: assist
the Chief Medical Officer in any way possible; to take orders from same;
and to substitute as CMO whenever he or she is for some reason unable to
perform his or her duties. The ACMO is basically a liaison between
departments, patients, and other Medical Officers.
Chief Nurse(CN):
The Chief Nurse of a starship/starbase is probably one of the
most experienced and trained medical officers onboard, save the CMO.
That is why, in most cases, you'll see a CN as acting CMO instead of the
ACMO. Weird, yes, but as the esteemed Captain Janeway said, 'Weird
is part of the Job'. Your duties as the CN will be to basically be
a miniature CMO. Organizing
duty shifts, taking care of patients, and running interference between
the 'little guys' and CMO. Assisting in surgeries, minor procedures,
and avery day problems are among the list of 'to do' but it's all really
quite easy.
Chief Surgeon (CS):
Really just what the name implies. He or she is in charge
of most if not all surgeries performed on their base/ship. This goes
without saying that they are ranked up there with the ACMO and CN.
Needless to say, they still make rounds like the other staff, and even
participate in triage efforts with the rest. It's just a specialty
position that's not really required on a normal post.
Nurses, Technicians, Doctors and EMT's[Emergency Medical Teams]:
All of these guys have basically the same job. Nurses
and Doctors have more responsibility, and rank, but do the same job as
the Techs and EMTs. The only difference between the 4 are: EMT's
and Doctors are usually the first 'on the scene' or a accident. Techs
and Nurses do the dirty work..literally. They get the unfortunate
task of cleaning up after the patients. All are the main ones to
perform the minor every day tasks.
Chain of Command:
The Medical department, not unlike the other departments, has
a chain of command. CO's, this is not the 'bible' on how to rank/place
your medical officers, just a tool for reference.
