Welcome to the New Frontier
Chapter 7:  Species Overview

Currently the New Frontier only recognizes standard Star Trek Species.  As time goes on we will certainly add a few of our own creations.  If you have an idea for a new species, please put your thoughts in an email to your CO. If they approve it, they will send it on to the Admiralty where a decision will made.

The following list is a general overview of each recognized species. Some are more indepth than others, and we will add to this list as time, and information, permits.

Andorians:
Physically, Andorians are humanoids similar to many in the Federation. They have distinctive blue skin and white hair, but the most obvious difference lies in their antenna; these are an extension of the nasal cavity, giving the Andorians an outstanding sense of smell and a high sensitivity to changes in air temperature, pressure or composition.

The basis of the Andorian culture is the Co-operative. This is a group of up to 100 families who have pooled their resources in a clan like structure. As members reach maturity they can choose to remain within the Co-operative or strike out on their own, forming a new unit or joining with another. Those who cannot decide on a Co-operative tend to become outcasts within Andorian society. The Andorians have no world government - the Supreme Co-operative represents them in the Federation, but it only covers some 30% of the population. As a result, many About 40% of the Andorian population live on the inland plains. These tend to be semi-nomadic, while the majority which live on the coast are city dwellers. The two groups have become increasingly isolated from one another over the last hundred years.

The home planet of the Andorians is called Fesoan in their language, or Andor by the Federation. It is a class M planet, the eighth of nine in the Epsilon Indi system. It is a large, hot dry world with little surface water, and a gravity of 0.9g. There are, vast underground water reserves which feed surface geysers heated by geothermal energy. Oases surrounding these geysers are the centers of the planet's main population areas, since the great majority of Andor's plant life thrives where subsurface water is plentiful. The population is only in the tens of millions; as a result, Andorians are a relatively rare sight in the Federation.

 Bajoran:
Race of humanoids from the UCIP planet Bajor. The normal gestation {carrying of young in the womb between conception and birth} of a Bajoran is less than five months. They vascularize quickly, during pregnancy mother and baby are linked together by a complex network of blood vessels. One of the most common side effects of pregnancy is sneezing.

Betazoids:
Externally, Betazoids are one of the most Humanoid species yet encountered; externally they are indistinguishable from Humans even at close range. All Betazoids are natural telepaths; most develop this ability in adolescence, but a few are born with their telepathic abilities already active. Unable to screen out the noise of other peoples minds, these individuals generally suffer mental problems of varying severity.

Betazoids can cross-breed with Humans, although this often affects the telepathic abilities of the offspring - most commonly the children of such a union develop empathic rather than telepathic abilities. All full Betazoids are unable to read the thoughts of Ferengi, Breen, Ullians or Dopterians, but some half Betazoids have been occasionally successful in sensing the emotions of some of these species.

The Breen:
A powerful and mysterious Alpha Quadrant species, the Breen are one of the very few major species who have evolved on a non-class M world. The Breen homeworld has an average temperature of approximately 220 Kelvin, a record low for any inhabited planet. They have evolved with a unique physiology in order to cope with this ultra-cold environment; although they breathe a fairly standard oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere at close to normal pressure, the Breen have no blood or other liquid circulatory system. Instead, their body is permeated by millions of tiny hollow tubules which are open to the skin. These allow oxygen to be carried directly into the body; once there it is absorbed directly through the skin to be used by the internal organs. A similar process carries the waste gasses back out again. The Breen reproductive cycle is also unusual, in that they commonly produce offspring at a very early age.

Normal Breen body temperature is 235 Kelvin; exposure to temperatures above 260 Kelvin will kill a Breen within minutes. Given that most known major spacefaring species live on class M planets with an average temperature far above that of Breen, the Breen have had to develop environmental suits of great capability and reliability in order to co-exist with others. Given their nature, it is understandable that the Breen have become one of the Alpha Quadrants leading experts at creating and maintaining extremely cold environments. They are acknowledged experts on cold storage of chemical compounds.

Some empathic species, most notably Betazoids, are unable to detect the thoughts or emotions of the Breen. Much of Breen is known to be a frozen wasteland, and it is widely thought that the Breen have deliberately avoided large surface developments for cultural reasons.
They have developed organic technology to the point where they routinely use biological spacecraft. (All other information classified. See Starfleet Intelligence Document 98744325-CLASSIFIED)

Borg:
A cybernetic life form, assimilated from other species.  They exist in a collective hive, and assimilate any and all biological and technological forms.

The Ferengi:
The Ferengi are a Humanoid species resident in the alpha quadrant of the galaxy. The Ferengi were found to follow the common Humanoid pattern, evidence that they share a common ancestry with the species which seeded many planets across the galaxy several billion years ago. (See starfleet science document 438269-3364) The Ferengi tend to be approximately 165 cm tall, and their most distinctive feature is a set of very pronounced ears. These are among the most sensitive of any known species, as well as being one of the major Ferengi erogenous zones. The Ferengi have a four lobed brain which makes them impervious to telepathy. The Ferengi metabolism is much faster then that of a human forcing Ferengi to need food more often. (The Ferengi day allows time for five meals.) Ferengi eyes are very weak causing them to prefer bright lights. Their teeth are small and pointy and the Ferengi diet consists of a high amount of meat.

Jem'Hadar:
The Jem'Hadar have been the subject of heavy genetic engineering in order to increase their effectiveness as soldiers; like many Dominion species, the Jem'Hadar are cloned rather than breeding naturally. They are mature within three days of leaving the birthing chamber, allowing for very rapid replacement of casualties. All Jem'Hadar have an inbuilt ability to 'shroud' themselves, a form of camouflage which effectively hides them from both sensors and the naked eye. (An ability not well understood. May be the result of nanoprobe implants. All information remains as speculation.) In addition, they are almost completely unaffected by many forms of anti-personnel forcefield. Jem'Hadar do not need to sleep, eat, or drink - the only substance they require is Ketracel White, an isogenic enzyme deliberately omitted from their physiology by the Founders. (Very little information beyond this is known. Due to the fast rate of decomposition an extended study of a Jem'Hadar body is yet to be successfully completed. Cryogenics does not seem to slow down this decomposition.)

The vast majority of Jem'Hadar never actually see a Founder, and many have built their service to the shapeshifters into a religion. They literally regard the Founders as living Gods, to the extent that Jem'Hadar have been known to commit suicide if they fail to protect a shapeshifter from harm. The Vorta, as the representatives of the Founders, are also given immense loyalty by most Jem'Hadar - even when such loyalty is unwarranted. Absolute obedience is further guaranteed by the Vorta's control of the Ketracel White.

Most Jem'Hadar die young, in battle - few reach fifteen years of age and any who reach the age of twenty are considered to be honored elders. No Jem'Hadar has ever reached thirty years of age.

Klingons:
One of the major powers of the beta quadrant, the Klingon species originated from the planet Qo'noS (pronounced kronos), a class M world. When the Klingons first made contact with the Federation they appeared almost totally humanoid. By 2271 most Klingons had acquired a single pronounced ridge of bone running laterally back across the skull; and by the 2290's all Klingons had a distinctive set of ridges. occupying almost the whole frontal area of their heads. At first it was believed that some form of genetic engineering or viral mutation was responsible for this species-wide change, but historical evidence indicates that the Klingons had this appearance throughout most of their history, becoming humanoid sometime prior to 2218 and then gradually reverting back to their normal appearance. The Klingons have consistently refused to provide any explanation for this transformation, simply stating that it is "a long story" that they "do not discuss with outsiders".

On average Klingons are larger and physically stronger than Humans. Many of their internal organs have redundant backups, including the heart, kidneys and liver, allowing them to survive considerable injuries. Klingons are noted for having no tear ducts, and while most have red blood there are some races whose blood is distinctly pink. All Klingons suffer from certain allergies, most notably a strong reaction to small furry animals such as cats and tribbles.

Lurians:
Lurians are a Humanoid species native to the alpha quadrant. Externally they are slightly larger than Humans; their skin tends to be rough textured and brown in color. They normally have hair on their bodies, but some Lurians have been known to become bald when poisoned by exposure to Latinum. Lurians have two stomachs, multiple hearts, and four lungs. Lurian metabolism is incredibly slow and their sleep cycle lasts for approx. 14 hours. The size of the Lurian stomachs means that they only eat once a day, a carry over from the days earlier in Lurioan evolution.
Lurians come from a wet swampy planet and prefer to live in humid muddy conditions, often bringing warm vats of mud into space with them.

The Lurian reproductive system is very active and they generally have large families - eighteen siblings is not unusual for a Lurian family.

Romulans:
Physically, Romulans are almost identical to their cousins the Vulcans. Externally most Romulans differ from Vulcans in having prominent ridges of bone on their foreheads, a trait which evolved after their departure from Vulcan in c. 369. However, the Romulans lack the rigorous mental disciplines developed by the followers of Surak and this, combined with the more benign environmental conditions on Romulus, has greatly limited the physical capabilities of Romulans compared to their ancestors.

Like the Vulcans the Romulans have surrendered unrestrained violence as a way of life. However, in the case of the Romulans this has been replaced with a controlled deviousness; as a species the Romulans are generally thought of as duplicitous, a reputation the actions of their government over the last decade has reinforced. Their reluctance to rely on overt hostility generally leads the Romulans to play a waiting game, attempting to manipulate an opponent into breaking - or appearing to break - an agreement so as to give them a solid justification for striking.

Trills:
The Trill physiology is externally similar to that of Humans, although internally they are very different. Trills have roughly the same organs as Humans as far as structure goes, although the positions of the liver and kidneys are different. Furthermore Trills have no appendix as well as an unused organ attached to the trachea.

To aid in symbiotic transfer the Trill nervous system is incredibly active with an average 18% more nerve endings than humans. This high activity is can cause an certain type of nervous disorder.

(See Below)
Trills are one of the very few joined species known in the alpha quadrant. Two separate intelligent species have evolved on the Trill homeworld -the hosts are a humanoid species who have two distinct races. The first, or alpha race, comprises approximately 10% of the Trill population; they are distinguishable by their pronounced foreheads, but in most respects their physiology is similar to that of the beta race who comprise the remaining 90% of the population. These are easily identifiable by a pattern of skin markings which extend from the forehead down the side of the face and all the way down the body. These spots move and change gradually over time, although they remain in the same region of the body. Both of these races are known as the Trill Hosts.
The second species is known as the Symbionts. These are relatively small, sluglike creatures who live underwater for most of their life. The Symbiots are extremely long lived and very intelligent, but lack any kind of limbs or tool-using ability.

Some thousands of years ago the Trill began living as a joined species the Hosts developed the ability to physically join with the Symbionts, linking their nervous systems together. The effects of this are different between the two races of Host; with the alphas the Symbiot totally submerges the Hosts personality upon joining, essentially using the body as a home for its own mind. Alphas tend to be less physically robust than betas; for example, many alphas are extremely sensitive to the energy processes involved in transporters, and using this technology would cause fatal damage to the Symbiont. For this reason betas are the preferred recipients in the joinings.

Betas also have some difficulties due to the joining process. Betas become physically dependent on the Host within 93 hours of the joining; after this period, removing the Symbiont is fatal to the Host. After a joining the mind of a beta is not submerged by the Host; the two separate minds merge, forming a new personality who is a combination of both the Host and Symbiont. This can cause severe psychological problems if the two minds are incompatible, resulting in rejection of the Host after only a few days - a rejection which often causes the death of the Host. Only one in every few thousand Hosts are suitable to be joined, (classified) and these must go through an exhaustive series of tests and training in order to qualify.

After the death of the Hosts the Symbiont is removed and placed into a new Host, carrying into the new joining all the personality and memories of the old. Many Symbionts have lived in this manner for centuries, accumulating experiences from many different lifetimes.

ALPHA CLEARANCE ONLY: Captain Sisko exposed the fact that over 50% of the Trill populus was compatible. Information was kept classified to avoid general hysteria and the breakdown of trill society. All information is classified under Starfleet medical directive 15.

Vorta:
Although initial contacts revealed comparatively little about this species, the capture of a Vorta prisoner by Captain Sisko allowed Starfleet Medical to gather detailed information. Like many Gamma quadrant species they have been genetically modified by the Founders to increase their usefulness to the Dominon. The Vorta are not able to breed by themselves - instead the Founders clone the Vorta as required, often creating several copies of an individual who has demonstrated particular value. The Vorta are known to suffer from weak eyes, although their hearing is excellent by Human standards. All Vorta are naturally immune to a very wide variety of poisons, useful in a species bred to serve partially as political leaders!

One interesting ability continues to puzzle Starfleet. The first known encounter between Vorta and a Federation citizen was when the woman known as Eris met Captain Sisko in 2370. Eris demonstrated a form of Telekinesis several times during the encounter, an ability that no other Vorta is known to posses. It is possible that the Eris possessed some form of artificial implant which permitted this, but it seems more likely that the Founders have engineered a sub-breed of Vorta with this faculty - and possibly with other PSI abilities also. If true this would considerably enhance the Vortas usefulness as intelligence agents. Further studies of the very few captured Vorta are underway in an attempt to resolve this mystery.

Vulcans:
The planet Vulcan orbits a red giant star relatively close to the Sol system. The climate is generally harsh, with much of the surface consisting of large deserts or mountain ranges. Vulcan is considerably larger than Earth and has both a higher gravity and thinner atmosphere. This gives Vulcans considerably more inherent strength than Humans, especially when in the relatively oxygen rich atmosphere most other humanoid species regard as standard. While externally similar to Humans, Vulcan anatomy differs radically; Vulcan blood is distinctly green in color. It is pumped by a heart which occupies roughly the same location as the Human liver and is capable of beating at several hundred beats per minute. Vulcans have very sensitive ears, and their eyes have an inner eyelid which has evolved as a defense against the harsh Vulcan sun.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Vulcan physiology is the brain. The Vulcan brain is in direct control of most of the bodily functions, acting as a control unit for many organs. Vulcans have learned to gain conscious control of many of these functions, allowing them to regulate their bodies to a high degree by simple willpower. When injured a Vulcan can go into a trance like state, using this ability to concentrate all of his or her energy onto repairing the injury. Most Vulcans also have almost complete control of automatic responses such as generated by intense pain. The Vulcan immune system is highly developed and enables them to resist most known forms of infection or illness.

Of course the most famous aspect of the Vulcan brain is the inherent telepathic ability. Almost all Vulcans are natural touch telepaths, though considerable training is required to utilize this ability fully. Stronger minds are capable of non-contact telepathy, usually over short distances and in a limited fashion; occasionally Vulcans have emerged whose telepathic abilities are far stronger than the norm. The rigorous mental training all Vulcans are given often allows such individuals to develop such abilities as emotional compulsion and psychic image projection. All expression of emotions was completely forbidden, negative or otherwise.
